Altar of the Wretched — Gravebound Utility

Altar of the Wretched is a pragmatic tool for black based graveyard decks and artifact synergies. When it enters the battlefield you can sacrifice a nontoken creature to convert raw power into card selection and self milling. That exchange is straightforward and repeatable; the draw then mill sequence trades battlefield presence for resources and graveyard fodder in one tidy motion.
Craft turns the altar into a low cost on demand engine when you commit creatures to it. The return ability helps recover a lost piece after a board wipe or targeted removal. Play it when you want a reliable outlet for creatures that otherwise have limited impact and when you want predictable graveyard setup for reanimation or threshold style plans.
