When Staunch Crewmate resolves, you look at the top four cards of your library and may take an artifact or Pirate into your hand while the rest go to the bottom in a random order. That ability is useful in tempo shells that need a mana piece now or a follow up threat on turn two or three.
Play it early to increase your consistency or later to refill options after a board trade. In Limited and casual Constructed it helps you shape a turn without overcommitting your resources.
