Volatile Fault is a compact toolbox land that trades itself for tempo. Volatile Fault lets you produce colorless mana on demand while keeping a reactive answer to troublesome nonbasic lands. Play it early for mana or hold it as a disruption piece to deal with a key utility land when the timing fits.
In a Lost Caverns of Ixalan deck this card is best thought of as situational removal that also gives your opponent a consolation basic land and a Treasure token for the exchange. Use it when an opponent's nonbasic land is stopping your line or when you need to convert a problematic permanents advantage into immediate resources for yourself.
