Icon of Ancestral Tools

Progenitor's Icon is a compact toolbox for tribal decks that need flexible mana and the occasional surprise cast. As the artifact enters, you pick a creature type which sets up the Icon's primary utility. You can always tap it for one mana of any color. That straightforward mana ability keeps your lines open while you set up the chosen tribe.

The second tap ability is the reason to sleeve this card in commander. The next spell of the chosen type you cast this turn can be cast as though it had flash. That lets a token producer, a lord, or a combat trick come down at instant speed to respond to removal or to force through a favorable block. In Lost Caverns of Ixalan lists this functions as a tactical tool more than a win condition, and it pairs cleanly with creatures that gain when cast or that matter on entering the battlefield.
