Whenever Merchant Raiders or another Pirate enters the battlefield under your control you may tap up to one target creature and that creature will not untap during its controller's untap step for as long as you control Merchant Raiders. That creates repeated windows to push damage or keep a key blocker offline without overcommitting resources.
